If you own or manage a production facility of any sort, you know the importance of the right shipping container; without a sturdy container protecting your goods while they're in transit, that product probably won't arrive safely at its end user, wasting the dollars and the time you invested in its manufacture. You have many options for shipping containers and methods; note a few differences in each so you can make the right choice for your materials.
Pallet collars
Pallet collars refer to sections of box walls that you stack on top of each other until they reach the desired height, and then over which you add a lid. These collars are a good choice for when you manufacture materials of various sizes and heights; you can make the container as tall or as short as necessary, so there is less wasted wood and no added weight to a container needed for a smaller product. This also allows you to maximize warehouse storage space since the packaging will only be as tall as needed to protect the product and no larger.
Wood crates
If you ship the same item over and over again, wood crates can be a good choice. These are very durable and actually very eco-friendly, as you can recycle the wood once the crate is no longer needed, or find new crates made with recycled wood. Wood crates have the advantage of being very attractive, so they can actually double as a display item; if you ship fresh produce, a market can sell it right from the crate, or you can remove a wall from a crate and use it as a trade show display for your product. Wood crates are also easy to stamp or paint, so you can paint labelling right on the crate repeatedly, as needed for each shipment.
Pallet wrap
Pallet wrap involves wrapping your item in a type of thin plastic shrink-wrap so you don't need to use a crate or any other such packaging. Pallet wrap has the advantage of being very lightweight so that it doesn't add much to your shipping costs, and it's good for added protection of delicate pieces, such as machinery. However, you do need an actual pallet wrap machine for this wrapping, and the wrap itself cannot be reused, as can wood containers; it's also somewhat cumbersome to remove the wrap from the product once its ships, so it may not be the most favoured option for your customers and end users.
